On Thursday, they played their second round singles matches on adjacent courts, then teamed up to defeat Leander Paes and Lukas Dlouhy in the doubles first round match.

Yesterday, Schuettler beat Phau in their quarter-final match to move in to the semis. And later the Germans paired up again to play Marcel Granollers and Santiago Ventura in the second round. "We also practice together!" Schuettler said.

SMS board nothing short of a nuisance

THE electronic board on the center court where the spectators can SMS their messages started off as a fun exercise but has now become a nuisance.

Most of the spectators routinely message inane one-liners trying to cast aspersions on one another.

One message even went so far as to tell the entire stadium that someone wants to take a leak. Other SMSes just laugh at the players.

Meet Tipsarevic, the philosopher

Janko Tipsarevic could easily come off as an intense philosopher. The Serbian is always muttering to himself on the court and is known for his interest in European philosophers and literature.

The diminutive 24-year-old has a quote from Fyodor Dostoevsky's classic The Idiot tattooed on himself amongst other pieces from foreign literature. The Dostoevsky quote reads, "Beauty will save the world."
