IPL's newest franchise, Sahara Pune Warriors, have been asked to remove 'Sahara' from their team name by BCCI, citing ambush marketing

In an interesting development, MiD DAY has learnt that Indian Premier League's (IPL) newest franchise, Sahara Pune Warriors, have been asked to remove 'Sahara' from their team name by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), citing ambush marketing.

"Since Sahara is a brand, it cannot be tagged along with the name of the IPL franchise. All the other teams have used unique names (not using the name of their organisation). GMR and Reliance are some of the examples. That's why Bangalore changed the name to Royal Challengers ufffd since that's not the name of a brand," a top BCCI official told MiD DAY.

However, spokesperson for the Warriors, Abhijit Sarkar said that the name 'Sahara' would be used everywhere besides the clothing. "Yes, it's true that we have been conveyed some messages. We are working out the technical aspects. We won't be using it on the clothing, but would continue to use it in the anthem and other promotional activity. We will ensure all guidelines are followed," he said.
