Stylish middle order batsman VVS Laxman, who was today honoured with the prestigious Padma Shri award, said it was great and satisfying moment for him as his achievements while playing for the country have been rewarded.
"I feel honoured as I have been bestowed with one of the most prestigious awards. It is indeed satisfying that my achievements while playing for the country have been rewarded. The biggest honour, however, is the opportunity to represent my country for so many years," Laxman told the mediapersons after it was announced that he is getting the award.
The Hyderabad stylist said it was the "result of the hardwork and passion that is reflected in his performances, when he represents country." "Awards and laurels are a by-product of what you are trying to do for your team and your country," he stated.
The overwhelming feeling was understandable as he thanked everyone who has helped him evolve as a cricketer.
"I would take this opportunity to thank my parents and my uncle who first spotted my talent. It was he (uncle) who encouraged me to take up the sport seriously. Also my wife (Shailaja) and kids whose support has been invaluable."
The 36-year-old veteran of 120 Test matches also took the opportunity to thank the central and Andhra Pradesh state government for thinking him worthy enough for the honour along with BCCI which recommended his name.
Laxman's father V Shantaram said, "I am delighted and thank God that my son has got the award. It's a dream come true for me, my wife and all family members."
