Mumbai Indians scrapped past Gujarat Lions in the first Super Over of IPL-10 after both teams were tied at 153 at the end of their respective innings here last night.
In the Super Over, batting first MI's Jos Buttler (1), Kieron Pollard (10) and Rohit Sharma (0) scored 11 runs off a James Faulkner over. In reply, Lions scored only six in a Jasprit Bumrah over.
Earlier, Irfan Pathan bowled a tight last over and despite going for a six off the first ball, prevented MIâÃu00c2u0080Ãu00c2u0088from scoring 11 runs needed for a win in the last six deliveries. MIâÃu00c2u0080Ãu00c2u0088needed one run off the last ball faced by last-man Lasith Malinga but Irfan's yorker-length ball struck him on the pad and he rushed for a single only for Krunal Pandya to fall short to a direct hit from Ravindra Jadeja.
Before that, Parthiv Patel scored 70 off 44 balls with nine fours and one six as MI were on course for an easy win but they lost the last five wickets for 26 runs to force the Super Over.
For a change, Gujarat Lions decided to set a target, a decision that seemed to backfire as three frontline batsmen fell easily to yorker experts Lasith Malinga and Jasprit Bumrah. First it was Malinga who clean-bowled the dangerous Brendon McCullum for six and sent Aaron Finch back for a duck. Bumrah then accounted for the in-form Suresh Raina, brilliantly caught by Kieron Pollard in the covers for just one. As if that was not enough, left-arm spinner Krunal Pandya had Dinesh Karthik stumped for two, leaving the Lions tottering at 56 for four.
