yesterday.

South Africa were 312 for two in their second innings at the close, an overall lead of 330. Smith muscled his way to his 19th Test century, finishing the day with 162 not out. Amla made 95. "Our guys went about their business very honestly today," said England coach Andy Flower. "They toiled very well and South Africa played very well."

Flower admitted that it would take a major effort by England to preserve their 1-0 lead in the series going into the fourth and final Test in Johannesburg starting January 17.
