Morocco earthquake: Pictures show widespread devastation

The earthquake that hit Morocco late last week has caused widespread destruction and devastation. The number of casualties, both fatalities and injuries, continued to increase on Tuesday as rescue teams worked tirelessly to extract people from the wreckage in villages that had been completely demolished. The earthquake, which had a magnitude of 6.8 and was followed by several aftershocks, left thousands of residents in need of essential supplies like food, water, and electricity, particularly due to large boulders blocking access to the steep mountain roads. A survivor of the deadly 6.8 magnitude September 8 earthquake cries as she sits on the rubble of her damaged house, in the mountain village of Moulay Brahim in al-Haouz province in central Morocco.

Medics treated a constant flow of casualties after Morocco's strongest-ever earthquake killed more than 2,800 people, but on September 12 hopes of finding more survivors under the rubble were fading.

The death toll in the earthquake has passed 2800. The rescue operation is still underway in the country in order to find the survivors. Search and rescue teams from Spain, the United Kingdom, and Qatar have joined Moroccan rescue efforts.

Meanwhile, experts say the most direct way to provide aid to those affected in the city of Marrakech and the rural areas in the Atlas Mountains is to donate to organisations that have operations already on the ground in Morocco.
