Authorities, including police and the provincial government, reported that the explosion was caused by an oil tanker. The presence of an oil tanker suggests that the explosion, which happened at 11 pm on Sunday night, was a deliberate act.
The victims were part of a convoy transporting Chinese staff employed by the Port Qasim Electric Power Company. Their convoy was targeted during the attack, resulting in the deaths of two and injuries to at least one other. The Chinese Embassy has confirmed these details and expressed concern over the safety of its citizens in Pakistan.
Zia Ul Hassan, the provincial home minister, indicated that the attack specifically aimed at foreigners, which raises alarms about the security of international workers in Pakistan.
There are thousands of Chinese workers in Pakistan, many of whom are involved in the Belt and Road Initiative, a major Chinese infrastructure project.
This incident could impact future investment and cooperation between Pakistan and China, as safety concerns may deter Chinese workers from participating in such projects.
Videos captured at the site showed flames engulfing vehicles and a significant plume of smoke rising into the night sky. Following the explosion, there was a heavy military presence at the site, the area was cordoned off.
The Chinese Embassy in Pakistan labelled the incident a "terrorist attack" and called for a thorough investigation. They expressed their condolences to the victims and their families.
Deputy Inspector General East Azfar Mahesar stated that authorities are working to determine the exact nature and cause of the blast.
Rahat Hussain, who works in the civil aviation department, described the explosion's force as so powerful that it shook the airport's buildings.
