The aircraft carried 62 passengers and five crew members; 32 survived the crash. Deputy Prime Minister Kanat Bozumbayev confirmed the fatalities, as reported by Interfax.

Russia’s aviation authority suggests a bird strike may have led to the emergency landing attempt. Heavy fog in Grozny reportedly forced the crew to seek an alternative landing site.

Those aboard included citizens from Azerbaijan, Russia, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan. Azerbaijan Airlines halts services from Baku to Russia’s Chechnya region pending the investigation.
