A schoolboy in Pakistan's Rawalpindi city died after doing multiple sit-ups as punishment for not doing his homework
Meher Ali fell down the stairs and died Monday while returning to his class room after the punishment.
Principal Patras Bhatti told Dawn: "Yes, Meher Ali and some other students were awarded the 'uthak-baithak' as punishment for not doing their home work. But none of them was tortured - not even so much as slapped."
Amir Elahi, a teacher, gave the punishment to some students of class seven for not doing their homework despite repeated warnings.
