A code for the safety of transvestites who perform at weddings and other events has been prepared by the Khyber Paktunkhwa government after a group was abused, beaten up and tonsured
Mian Iftikhar Hussain, the provincial government spokesperson, said the step was taken to tackle exploitation of transvestites.
The government stepped in after a group of transvestites was abused and beaten up and their heads were shaved off Sunday night after they performed at a wedding party.
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Shemale Association held demonstration against the incident and demanded protection for the community, Dawn reported Wednesday.
"Transvestites are human beings and they have equal rights as men and women enjoy in our country. So we want to make it clear that providing protection to this segment is also responsibility of government and we will ensure it," Hussain was quoted as saying.
Hussain said that those wishing to take transvestites for performance in their parties would have to get their particulars registered at the police station.
"Similarly, all such parties will close at midnight so that the transvestites can reach their homes safely," he added.
