Kabul: More than 350 inmates escaped on Monday after Taliban militants attacked a prison in Afghanistan's eastern province of Ghazni, an official said.
"One militant rammed a car bomb at main gate of the prison around 2 a.m. (local time). Shortly after the blast, six militants disguised in police uniform entered the jail, assisting the inmates to leave the complex," Xinhua news agency quoted Mohammad Ali Ahmadi, deputy provincial governor as saying.
The initial information showed that 352 prisoners, including a number of inmates, succeeded to flee while security forces intercepted more than 80 prisoners.
"Four policemen of the jail were killed while 14 people, including four inmates and 10 security forces, were injured," Ahmadi said, adding "a massive operation has been initiated to arrest the escapees".
Sediq Sediqqi, the country's Interior Ministry spokesman, said an investigation was launched into the incident.
The Taliban militant group has claimed responsibility for the incident.
