A mother of two was mutilated and left to die yards from her childminder's front door in Greenford,
west London.

Geeta Aulakh (26) was found in a pool of blood with a severed hand and a head injury. The radio-station receptionist was taken to hospital, but was pronounced dead four hours later.

The victim's estranged husband Harpreet is understood to be one of six men arrested in connection with the incident.

Earlier, Aulakh had walked home with colleague Seema Sidha before getting on a bus to pick up her sons, aged nine and eight.

"She was a very helpful, very happy person, always smiling," said 31-year-old Sidha.

It is thought Geeta had started divorce proceedings days earlier. She had been too scared to go to the police, her sister Anita said, even though she had felt threatened for months.

Added Anita, "She feared for her life but she wasn't able to talk about it to anyone. She didn't want to worry us."

She had recently returned from Punjab where she had attended a cousin's wedding.
