Beijing: China yesterday vowed to protect its maritime rights and said it is capable of "addressing security threats" and "provocations", amid escalating tensions over the disputed South China Sea.

A UN tribunal on July 12 struck down Beijing's claims over the strategic waters.

However, state councillor and defence minister Chang Wanquan said the military will "safeguard national sovereignty, and development interests, including territorial integrity and maritime rights and interests".
