So much of the outbreak has been dominated by figures. Since the pandemic brought the world to a screeching halt in early 2020, numbers have been the big talking point. First it was the numbers through the world. Which country had Corona cases, how many deaths reported where, countries which had huge numbers, countries that had smaller numbers, the world statistics were up and running on social media and comparisons were touted by people at home, and leaders alike.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) reeled off numbers about how many people were affected in different ways, occasionally, how many months were we away from a vaccine, different numbers but numbers nevertheless.
Then came India and its blistering second wave, with numbers pointing to very dark times for the nation. Within this scenario, there were accusations hurled about fudging numbers of deaths, with political parties hurling insults and allegations at each other.
We had numbers everywhere as the virus peaked, as it showed a slight decline or plateau, once again showing us that numbers hold the real story in this pandemic. Then of course, were other offshoot numbers, zooming petrol and diesel prices within outbreak, harbingers of hardship and mocking the achche din plank of the ruling dispensation.
We now need to concentrate on the numbers of vaccinations, it is the big stats that matter today. Up the numbers, help those that want the jab and are struggling to find a slot, become proactive in your own little worlds about really making the vaccine numbers go up. On Monday, there were plenty of cheers on social media about the large numbers of people vaccinated. Let us try to break that record every day. Now, it is these numbers that really count.
