Need to ensure evaluation of papers is fair

Chaos reigned at a law college, a report said, after 10 students alleged that they were wrongfully failed in practical exams. In a letter to the vice-chancellor of the Mumbai University, senate members and students alleged incorrect evaluation and demanded action against those responsible for it.

To give context, on March 25, a practical exam was held for students of three- and five-year courses. The results for the same were announced on May 10, and 90 students were declared as failed. After students called for a re-evaluation, all passed except 10. Now these 10 are still raising concerns about the evaluation process.

Those supporting the students claim the re-evaluation was done to cover up a goof up. The college said it will do all it can to address the students who are still concerned.

We do hope that whatever support or looking into needs to be done for these students who are still questioning the results, they do get answers and a fair evaluation.

We are not declaring that they may have passed or failed; all this is, is a case for justice. If the mammoth number who had been declared failed passed, except a handful, after calling out the process, it is natural for those who have still been declared failed to have doubts.

This calls for complete transparency and even meetings with authorities and students' representatives so that grey areas are cleared and there is a sense of justice rather than simmering resentment.

One acknowledges the fact that most papers are corrected fairly and at times, students overall may be unable to see where they have erred. However, because of this scenario's backstory outlined above it is important to see all problems resolved. Otherwise, you will see embittered youngsters losing faith in the institution and academic system.
