The recent revelation of a father raping his daughters at the instructions of a tantrik in the presence of their mother has shocked everyone. The helpless predicament of the 21-year-old girl stifling because of her superstitious father and the monstrous tantrik forces us to think that social security is non-existent in our society. Our social activists should hang their heads in shame.
The genesis of this problem is the fear that is instilled in women. Today, abused women seldom speak out for fear of social stigma. Insensitive policemen and a long-drawn judicial process make matters worse.
The Mira Road case should serve as an eye-opener to our society. Social activists should lose no time in eradicating taboos. Our educational system should be made more sensitive by timely identifying the signs of social abuse in girls and teaching women how to fight for justice.u00a0
