Making sense of the good, bad and often strange trending topics online
'I am ashamed to be an Indian.' Those words put Rahul Gandhi under a very large spotlight. He made the remark after meeting agitating farmers in Bhatta Parsaul, after which he was arrested and promptly released. A certain Kiran Kumar had a question: 'When your UPA ally was forcing farmers to sell their land in Tamil Nadu, why weren't you ashamed then?'
Fast forward
If you want to clog Twitter timelines, please consider a hunger strike. It's what senior BJP leader Rajnath Singh did, in support of the aforementioned farmers. There were signs, however, that the move may no longer evoke the kind of sympathy it once did. As someone online put it, this is now becoming a cool way to go on a diet.
God in the details
Ekta Kapoor has reportedly added the Hanuman Chalisa to all prints of her upcoming film Ragini MMS. This after making sure the title cropped up on auto-rickshaws, the back of her car, and most other spaces not occupied by politicians wishing each other a happy birthday. Someone called Haamid Peerzada had an interesting suggestion: 'After Ragini,' he tweeted, 'Ekta's next venture should be titled Amar CD Katha.'
For the birds
The release of a video game called Angry Birds for Chrome brought cheer to many, specifically those with an inordinate amount of spare time. Hugely popular on smartphones, its availability on a browser should now lead to a significant loss of productivity at offices everywhere. For those who haven't tried it, the aim of the game is to launch birds at pigs on a playfield. Rocket scientists, please avoid.
The last word
Finally, Suhel Seth took time off from being resident expert on a number of panels to say this: 'It's been a long time, after the Mahatma and Indira, since a Gandhi went to jail. The jails will now improve!'
