Digital power is currently scrambling the established rules of Indian media. In a giddy first-past-the-post flush, one national daily has proudly announced its availability on the eu2013reader, Kindle. It is now merely a matter of time before others too clamber aboard.
Meanwhile, the Tatas have pushed the envelope by now offering live television fare on non-3G mobile phones.
However, opinion is still divided on the size and feasibility of the market all of this currently caters to.
But, not everyone is upbeat about our increasingly digitised world. Certainly, old media has received a battering from Google and other search engine companies. Their shrinking revenues have only darkened the mood. Those voices were loud and clear at the World Newspaper Conference in Hyderabad last week. Protect and survive was the message they shared with each other. But it may already be too late for that simple a solution.
Growth ain't enough
Hiring trends seem to be looking upwards. An undergrad in Dilli recently bagged a package worth Rs 32 lakh from a foreign bank. IIM Kolkata authorities too seem pleased with the placements of their students this year. Even beyond the IIMs and IITs, the job scene is looking promising across sectors like automobiles, textiles and IT/BPO, which generated an estimated 5 lakh jobs in the second quarter. And with banks on the verge of large-scale hiring, it would seem that things can only get better.
But, observers say, the present situation may seem deceptive. Hiring is currently largely restricted to the middle management and the past festive season ominously actually saw a slowdown in terms of hiring. And, they expect only moderate hiring in December too. So, we may have to hold on until next year for the smiles to stay for more than a flicker.
