'Vote'ver!

Election ke din agar aap vote nahin kar rahein ho to aap so rahein ho.

Election ke din agar aap vote nahin kar rahein ho to aap so rahein ho. With low voter turnouts in the four phases of elections held so far, it looks like more than half of the country is sleeping.

Like the dormant politicians of our country who wake up every five years the voters too have become careless.

Finger food for the soul: "I will become the prime minister of those who don't vote," said the writer's friend, leaving him aghast

My friend, name withheld, wants to become the Prime Minister of India.

Although, he has never voted in his life, he feels his chances become brighter with every election.

According to him, he has a humungous number of supporters behind him.

Curious me asked, How? Replied he, Simple. I will become the prime minister of those who don't vote. No wonder he has been bragging about the increasing numbers this election.

I told him he could become nothing without an electoral process. His wafer-thin grin said it all and in that moment of silence, I was sent packing.

My other friend, name withheld again, looked cluelessly at both of us.

I was in no mood to explain, but he insisted. What has your MP done in your constituency, I asked. This time, I got a smirk in reply.

The five-phase election has taken away the soul of these hustlings. It's way too much. By the time May 16 arrives, half of those who voted would have forgotten that a government needs to be formed.

Half of the half that voted, will switch on the television sets on May 16 to cheer their IPL favourite and may, accidentally, find out the election results if they bother to surf channels.

In these times of Twenty20, a five-phase election process sounds like a Test match. And with a ban on opinion and exit polls, elections for the next 10 years will have only party workers standing in queue to vote.
