Mohan created a brand that withstood the influx of national and international competition
Mohan created a brand that withstood the influx of national and international competition and ensured that dark rum was enjoyed all across the country and, perhaps, across the world too. Very few brands, to my knowledge, had such a following. Though I am not a fan, I must mention here that rum drinkers don't perceive Old Monk as just another inexpensive brand, but salute and celebrate it for its quality and value for money that has remained consistent over time.
Like most youngsters, trying to figure their way around different types of alcohol, I too experimented with it while in college. I've seen how it continues to remain a favourite among armed personnel as well as people from all walks of life. Step into any Indian home that has a bar, and you're bound to spot a bottle of Old Monk in their cellar. He certainly created a brand that remains intrinsic to alcohol-consuming households in the country.
I doff my hat to him for taking such a risk back in the day, and for having continued to keep the demand for it till date. For this, we are grateful. Such was his legacy. He made rum drinking not about getting drunk but about a classic drink that became a staple. It was phenomenal. In fact, I've noticed that even in many bars that don't serve Indian liquor, Old Monk will nearly always be on the menu. Such was the fine testament to the man. I am sure that dark rum drinkers across the country are raising a toast to the great Kapil Mohan for bringing Old Monk into their lives.
