Suspecting his wife of having an affair with a cloth vendor, a 30 year-old welder allegedly beat his wife to death on Friday night. Accused Mohammad Shiraz Khan, a resident of Kamraj Nagar in Ghatkopar, surrendered before the Pant Nagar police on Saturday morning.
"On Friday night, Khan had a fight with his 26 year-old wife, Kumsum Khan. He says he found his wife in an intimate situation with a cloth vendor at their residence on Wednesday. Earlier too, he had suspected that they were having an affair, leading to constant arguments. But the quarrelling took a sinister turn on Friday, when Kumsum threatened to leave him. Enraged, he started beating her with a stick.
She eventually succumbed to the wounds she had sustained," said police sub inspector S Mokal from Pant Nagar police station, who is investigating the case.
Khan, who surrendered before the Kamraj Nagar beat chowky on Saturday morning, said in his police statement, "When I found her with the vendor on Wednesday, I had warned her. I knew they were having a relationship. On Friday night, she threatened to leave me when I asked her not to meet him again. In anger, I ended up killing her."
"On Saturday morning, Khan called his mother and siblings home. When they reached, he recalled the incident and later surrendered to the police," said Mokal.u00a0
The police refused to name the cloth vendor implicated in the affair and said they were questioning him along with the couple's neighbours to get some more information about them. Pant Nagar police also clarified that Khan was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs when the incident took place.
Kumsum's body was taken to Rajawadi hospital, but her family members told the police to wait until they arrived from Hyderabad. "They want to see the post mortem report for themselves. They suspect that the accused will try to tamper with the investigation. The cause of death has hence not been ascertained as yet. Khan has been arrested on the charges of murder," added Mokal.
The couple was married for eight years and had three children.
