South Korea is facing a major political crisis, and President Yoon Suk Yeol’s troubles are far from over. On December 31, a court approved an arrest warrant for Yoon, making it the first such warrant for a sitting president in South Korea. The Corruption Investigation Office confirmed the decision, and the Seoul Western District Court issued the warrant. Yoon is being investigated for possible insurrection charges after he ignored a summons for questioning. Police have been unsuccessful in attempting to raid the Presidential office as part of the investigation. Insurrection charges can lead to prosecution of a sitting president in South Korea. Yoon had earlier been suspended and apologized for trying to impose martial law, which led to his impeachment.
