Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte released a video message for his supporters on March 12, just before arriving in Rotterdam. Shortly after he landed in the Netherlands, the International Criminal Court (ICC) confirmed that Duterte was arrested and taken into their custody. The ICC said he was detained by Philippine authorities under an arrest warrant for charges of murder as a crime against humanity. Duterte, who faces accusations related to his controversial war on drugs, was transferred to a detention facility near The Hague, where other high-profile war crimes suspects are held. At 79 years old, Duterte will stay at the ICC Detention Centre, which is part of a larger prison complex. If his trial moves forward, he could become the first former Asian head of state to be tried at the ICC in The Hague.
