Cyclone Michaung barrelled into the southern Indian coast on December 5 with intense winds, its arrival preceded by torrential rains and flooding that killed at least 13 people, as officials assessed the damage. Trees were uprooted and at least 25 villages were inundated as the cyclone traversed northwards and authorities evacuated more than 15,000 people to safety ahead of landfall. More than 140 trains and 40 flights were cancelled in the state of Tamil Nadu. In Chennai, residents struggled with waist-deep floodwaters that also submerged cars. In an attempt to flush rainwater out of the city, another corporation of Tamil Nadu, Coimbatore, dispatched twelve 41-HP motors to Chennai for flood relief operations.
