Vadodara boat capsize: Gujarat cops file case; PM Modi announces ex-gratia

Following the boat capsize tragedy at Harni Motnath Lake, which resulted in 14 casualties—including teachers and students—Vadodara Police has opened a case.

Two teams of Vadodara Fire and Emergency Services were on standby at the incident site, utilising underwater cameras for the ongoing search operation.

Sub-fire officer Jaideep Gadhavi reported that out of the 20 initially rescued, 14, including teachers, unfortunately lost their lives. Eight Vadodara Rescue Teams are actively engaged in the search, aiming to identify missing children based on their belongings.

DCP Vadodara Leela Patil informed that post-mortem procedures for the deceased are currently in progress, emphasizing the official response to the tragic incident.

Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi visited the injured at SSG Hospital in Vadodara, expressing solidarity and ensuring a thorough inquiry into the matter.

The victims, comprising schoolchildren and teachers, have been identified, and one survivor, Sufiya Shaukat Shaikh (13), is receiving medical attention. The deceased individuals, including their names, were listed.

Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi announced the registration of a case under relevant IPC sections and the apprehension of two accused individuals. A magisterial inquiry has been initiated by Vadodara District Collector.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences and announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh from the PMNRF for each deceased person, along with Rs 50,000 for the injured. The Gujarat Government pledged Rs 4 lakhs for the next of kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured.
