Loan apps racket: Cops net five who tortured borrowers

Exactly 15 days after the state home minister called a meeting with top Maharashtra Cyber Cell officials along with mid-day reporters, taking cognisance of the loan app harassment reportage, the Cyber Cell has busted one module originating from Karnataka. Five accused who have been harassing borrowers by morphing their pictures and sharing the same with the victims’ contacts were arrested. The arrested accused includes a supervisor who was on the payroll of the loan app syndicate.

In an attempt to subdue a mentally disturbed youth who was trying to kill himself, his mother, sister and aunt overpowered and held him so firmly that he fell unconscious, and was later declared brought dead at a hospital. The incident took place in Juhu in the wee hours of Saturday and the Juhu police arrested the three women on Sunday.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi left the Enforcement Directorate (ED) office after around four hours of questioning in the money-laundering case related to the National Herald on Tuesday. Gandhi, 51, arrived at the ED office in New Delhi around 11:05 am, accompanied by his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. "His statement was recorded under the criminal sections of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA)," officials said. The MP from Wayanad in Kerala spent over 10 hours at the ED office on Monday, where he was questioned over multiple sessions.

NCP chief Sharad Pawar has refused to be the opposition parties' nominee for the presidential election, CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury said. Pawar met Yechury, CPI general secretary D Raja, and NCP leaders Praful Patel and PC Chacko in Delhi and conveyed to them his decision to not contest the election. "I have been informed that Pawar will not be the opposition face for the presidential polls, other names are under consideration," said Yechury.
