The last rites of Sushil Kumar Modi, a senior BJP leader and former deputy chief minister of Bihar, was conducted in Patna on Tuesday evening.

Modi, aged 72, succumbed to cancer on Monday evening while undergoing treatment at a hospital in New Delhi. His demise has saddened the political fraternity and the people of Bihar.

The mortal remains of the former deputy CM were flown from New Delhi to Patna earlier in the day. Senior BJP leaders and supporters gathered at the Patna airport to pay their respects and receive the body.

After reaching his residence in Rajendra Nagar, the body was kept for public homage. Subsequently, it was taken to the Bihar assembly and then to the state BJP office before proceeding to the Digha ghat crematorium for the final rites.

The funeral proceedings commenced at around 6 pm. BJP president J P Nadda was present during the cremation ceremony to pay his respects.

Sushil Modi wascremated with full state honours, reflecting the respect and recognition accorded to him for his contributions to Bihar's political landscape over the years.

Modi's tenure as the deputy chief minister of Bihar from 2005 to 2013, and again from 2017 to 2020, left an indelible mark on the state's governance and politics. His passing marks the end of an era in Bihar politics.

Last month, Modi revealed his battle with cancer through a social media post. Despite his health struggles, he continued to serve the people of Bihar with dedication.
