Repair work on the Munak Canal in North Delhi continued on Friday after a breach in the canal caused severe flooding in the Bawana JJ Colony.

The breach occurred in the sub-branch of the canal, leading to water inundating residential areas and causing significant disruption.

On Thursday night, dewatering machines were deployed to clear the waterlogging in the affected areas. The breach in the canal's Career Lined Channel (CLC) resulted in floods, prompting immediate action to mitigate the impact on the residents of the JJ Colony in Bawana.

Delhi Lieutenant Governor (LG) VK Saxena visited the flooded areas to assess the situation. He directed the Chief Secretary to coordinate with the Water Minister and the Minister of the Flood Control Department to ensure the matter is addressed with the Haryana Authorities for the canal’s restoration and maintenance.

The CEO of the Delhi Jal Board assured that repair work on the breach was being carried out on a war footing and expected to be completed by Friday evening.

National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams were dispatched to evacuate affected people. The Irrigation and Flood Control Department was instructed to deploy pumps to drain out water and provide additional boats to assist in the evacuation and relief efforts. The Disaster Management Cell was also activated to provide necessary support.

The Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) was directed to ensure adequate arrangements for relief and rehabilitation, including providing basic services and shelter to those displaced by the flooding. Medical teams were also put on alert to address any health emergencies arising from the situation.

The LG emphasised the need for coordination between the Delhi Jal Board and the Haryana Irrigation Department to ensure the timely restoration and maintenance of the Munak Canal.
