In Photos: Protests in Kolkata continue despite rain

The protests by medical professionals continued in Kolkata on Friday, despite rain. The members of the medical community are demanding justice for a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee who was brutally sexually assaulted and murdered on August 9 in a state-run hospital in Kolkata. Meanwhile, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a notice to the Kolkata Police Commissioner over the use of excessive and brutal force on Tuesday on protesters

On Saturday, the Federation of All India Medical Associations (FAIMA) will hold a peaceful protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi 

During one of the protests that took place early on Saturday, a civic volunteer of Kolkata Police allegedly rode into a barricaded area with his motorcycle and injured a Rabindra Bharati University student who was holding a demonstration 

Apart from justice for the victim, the doctors are demanding that the government expedite the enactment of the long-pending Central Healthcare Protection Act, which seeks to ensure the safety of healthcare professionals across the country

The case is currently being investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation. The Kolkata Police, which was earlier probing the sexual assault and murder, had arrested a civic volunteer for the crime
