The Federation of All India Medical Associations (FAIMA) has approached the Supreme Court, filing an urgent application to address the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

FAIMA's petition to the Supreme Court underlines the urgent need for enhanced security and better working conditions for healthcare workers, particularly women doctors, who face ongoing threats in their line of duty. The plea follows the tragic incident in Kolkata that has sparked nationwide protests.

In its press release, FAIMA expressed appreciation for the Chief Justice of India's attention to the working environment of resident doctors and his commitment to improving their security. The association is hopeful that the Supreme Court's intervention will lead to necessary reforms.

As part of its plea, FAIMA has requested the installation of CCTV cameras in sensitive hospital areas and strict compliance with the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Act, 2013. The association is also advocating for a 24x7 distress call facility to enhance doctors' safety.

FAIMA has asked for representation of resident doctors in the newly formed National Task Force to address real-time safety issues and develop comprehensive guidelines for safeguarding healthcare workers across the country.

FAIMA's petition to the Supreme Court includes a call for interim measures such as maintaining equal bed-to-doctor ratios and providing secure resting areas for doctors until the National Task Force's recommendations are fully implemented.

In its plea, FAIMA is seeking a clear timeline for the enforcement of the National Task Force’s recommendations. The association stresses the importance of timely implementation to ensure that medical professionals can work in a safe and dignified environment.

FAIMA’s plea to the Supreme Court highlights the critical need for safeguarding the lives and dignity of doctors, particularly in the wake of the shocking rape and murder case in Kolkata. The association urges swift and effective action to protect healthcare workers.

In response to the growing concerns over doctors’ safety, the Supreme Court has established a 10-member National Task Force, which includes prominent medical professionals like Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin.

The task force is tasked with making recommendations to prevent violence against healthcare workers and ensure safe working conditions.
