The day honours the bravery and sacrifices of Indian armed forces in the war that led to the creation of Bangladesh. Singh paid homage to fallen soldiers and saluted their unwavering courage and patriotism.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed tribute to the soldiers who contributed to India's victory in 1971. The Prime Minister highlighted the selfless dedication of soldiers and their role in safeguarding the nation.
The sacrifice of the armed forces continues to inspire generations, according to PM Modi’s tribute. Along with Rajnath Singh, Chief of Defence Staff Gen Anil Chauhan paid homage to the fallen heroes.
Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force officers, alongside Bangladesh Army officials, laid wreaths at Vijay Smarak in Kolkata. The 1971 war, which lasted 13 days, culminated in Pakistan's surrender and the liberation of Bangladesh.
The Indian Air Force (IAF) played a key role in securing swift victory during the conflict, particularly in air superiority. IAF's air campaigns involved over 2400 offensive missions in the Western sector and more than 2000 sorties in the East.
The Indian Air Force's strategic strikes were instrumental in hastening the collapse of Pakistani defences. Lt Gen AAK Niazi's surrender marked the end of the war, heralding the birth of an independent Bangladesh.
The IAF's dominance was so impactful that Gen Niazi attributed his surrender to the power of the Indian Air Force. The coordinated efforts of the Indian military, including the Air Force, led to the victory in the war, termed the "Lightning War."
The victory highlighted the importance of air superiority in modern warfare, as noted by the IAF. India and Bangladesh jointly commemorate the 53rd anniversary of Vijay Diwas with celebrations involving war veterans.
Eight Indian war veterans and two serving officers travelled to Dhaka for Bangladesh's Victory Day celebrations. The commemoration strengthens the historical and military ties between India and Bangladesh, honouring shared sacrifices.
