South Lhonark lake, situated in North West Sikkim, had seen a cloud burst causing incessant monsoon rainfall during the early hours of Wednesday morning (Pic/PTI)

The Defence Public Relations Officer (PRO) based in Guwahati released information about the incident, stating, "23 army personnel have been reported missing due to a flash flood that occurred in Teesta River in Lachen Valley after a sudden cloud burst over Lhonak Lake in North Sikkim

The flash flood, stemming from this incident, swept through River Teesta, causing significant damage

The Gangtok District Administration confirmed the destruction of the Indreni Bridge in Singtam town, situated about 30 kilometers from Gangtok. Another connecting bridge in Balutar hamlet was also carried away in the deluge around 4 am

The Teesta Stage 5 dam at Dikchu in Mangan district was opened up for water disbursement after a high alert

Due to the proximity to River Teesta, homes in Singtam, a town in Gangtok, have been evacuated as a safety measure
