1. 1988 road rage case: SC imposes one-year sentence on Navjot Singh Sidhu
The Supreme Court Thursday imposed a one-year sentence on cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu in a 1988 road rage case. A bench of Justices A M Khanwilkar and S K Kaul allowed the review plea filed by the victim's family on the issue of the sentence awarded to Sidhu.
2. Supreme Court to hear challenge to Gyanvapi mosque survey on May 20
The Supreme Court on Thursday asked the Varanasi civil court to desist from hearing the Gyanvapi mosque survey case after the lawyer representing the Hindu plaintiffs sought an adjournment for a day.
3. Terror funding case: Delhi court convicts Kashmiri separatist leader Yasin Malik after he pleads guilty
A Delhi court on Thursday convicted Kashmiri separatist leader Yasin Malik, who had earlier pleaded guilty to all charges, including those under the stringent Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA), in a terror funding case.
4. Krishna Janmabhoomi case: UP court allows lawsuit seeking removal of mosque
A court here on Thursday allowed a petition seeking to remove the Shahi Idgah mosque that it claims is built on the land belonging to the Keshav Dev temple, the birthplace of Lord Krishna, a lawyer for the Hindu side said. Hari Shankar Jain said the court has accepted one of the multiple pleas on the matter.
5. Cheating case: Supreme Court grants SP leader Azam Khan interim bail
The Supreme Court on Thursday granted interim bail to jailed Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan in a cheating case. A bench headed by Justice L Nageswara Rao invoked its special power under Article 142 of the Constitution to grant relief to Khan in view of the peculiar facts of the case.
6. Recommendations of GST Council not binding on Centre, States: Supreme Court
The Supreme Court on Thursday held that recommendations of the GST Council are not binding on the Centre and the States but only have a persuasive value, while striking down the levy of integrated GST on ocean freight, dismissing a plea by the revenue authorities challenging a Gujarat High Court order.
7. SC dismisses plea to review decision on removal of Cyrus Mistry as Tata Sons head
The Supreme Court Thursday dismissed a plea of the Sapoorji Pallonji (SP) group seeking a review of the 2021 verdict which had upheld the Tata group's decision to remove Cyrus Mistry as the executive chairman of the Tata Sons. A bench headed by Chief Justice N V Ramana, however, ordered the deletion of certain remarks made against Cyrus Mistry in the March 2021 verdict.
