A trial court, in 1996, found KPS Gill, a former Punjab Director General of Police, guilty of outraging the modesty of a woman IAS officer Rupan Deol Bajaj in 1988. Bajaj had complained that when Gill was once drunk, he had made sexual advances towards her at a party. In 2005, the Supreme Court upheld the conviction of the lower court, which directed Gill to pay Rs. 2 lakh compensation to Bajaj

In May 2011, a hotel maid Nafissatou Diallo accused former International Monetary Fund (IMF) chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn of forcing her to perform oral sex and trying to rape her when she went to clean his hotel room in Manhattan. Strauss-Kahn was arrested and charged with attempted rape and other crimes, but the charges against him were dropped after New York City prosecutors said Diallo had credibility problems. Kahn was forced to resign as head of the IMF and abandon his plans to run for president in his native France
