In the first Delta Plus case in Rajasthan, a 65-year-old woman, who recovered from Covid-19 in May and had undergone both doses of vaccination, has tested positive with the variant. With this, Rajasthan became the ninth state in the country to register the new virus strain.

According to Bikaner's PBM Hospital Superintendent Parmendra Sirohi, "The patient's sample was sent to NIV on May 31 and after 25 days, the state government received the reports, which were then sent to Bikaner district collector for further action." Bikaner CMHO OP Chahar said: "Special instructions have been issued for tracing in and around the residence of the woman. All those people who tested positive in the area in the last one month will be tested again."

The Rajasthan government is taking this issue seriously. Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot said that there will be no laxity in services and the new guidelines will ensure that the Delta Plus variant does not spread.

Gujarat to adopt measures

The Department of Health and Family Welfare (DoH) of the Union Ministry of Health on Friday asked Gujarat Chief Secretary (CS) Anil Mukim to adopt immediate containment measures in Surat district, where the new variant has been found.

According to the information available, even the Maharashtra administration found that out of the 20 persons identified in Maharashtra to be infected with the Delta Plus variant, two had a travel history to Surat.

The Indian SARS-CoV-2Genomics Consortium (INASCOG), the consortium of laboratories, has been entrusted to not only carry out the whole genome sequencing of the Coronavirus and its variants, but has also been told to give timely inputs on appropriate public health response in regions where the variant has been found.

Karnataka on alert

Raising concern over the intensity of the second wave not declining in neighbouring Maharashtra and Kerala, Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Friday directed officials to intensify surveillance on border areas to keep track of passengers arriving from these states. "We need to subject everyone who arrives from Maharashtra and Kerala to tests as in these states, Covid cases are still on the rise and cases related to the Delta Plus mutant were also recorded more in number in these states."
