Two labourers were killed and 16 others sustained injuries after a four-wheeler hit a truck from behind near Utelwa in Amethi on the Lucknow-Varanasi highway early on Wednesday morning, police said. The vehicle carrying 18 labourers, who worked in a bread factory in Varanasi, was on its way to Lucknow when the incident occurred around 4 am, SHO of the Kamrauli Police Station Abhinesh Kumar said.
According to a report in PTI, the police suspect that the driver of the vehicle was sleepy when it hit the truck from behind.
Manoj Kumar and Ram Kishore, both aged 30 and residents of Sitapur died on the spot meanwhile the injured - including eight whose condition is reported to be critical - are undergoing treatment at a hospital, said the SHO. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem, the officer added.
Reportedly, the locals alerted the police about the accident after they heard screams of the survivors from the site. A case has been filed in the incident and a probe is underway.

Mizoram bridge collapse kills over 20
In another accident in Mizoram, over 20 migrant labourers from West Bengal lost their lives after an under-construction bridge in Mizoram collapsed. The incident happened near the town of Sairang where up to 40 workers were at the site at the time of bridge collapse. The Railways is conducting a probe into the accident. Reportedly, the bridge no 196 over Kurung river between Bairabi and Sairang railway station collapse around 9.45 am on August 23.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi's office announced in a media statement that the government will pay Rs 2,00,000 to the kin of deceased from Prime Minister Relief Fund (PMMRF). Meanwhile, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakhs. West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose visited the homes of deceased labourers recently and Railway officials presented the compensation in his attendance. Each family received Rs 9, 50, 000 in cheque and Rs 50,000 in cash.
The Union Railway Ministry gives Rs 10 lakhs to the deceased, Rs 2 lakhs to the critically injured and Rs 50,000 to those with less severe injuries.
