Two Supreme Court judges object to CJI Bobde’s collegium meeting

The Supreme Court collegium headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) S A Bobde held a meeting on Thursday to discuss possible candidates for appointment of judges in higher judiciary. The CJI would superannuate on April 23.

The five-member collegium's meeting assumes significance as it was held after President Ram Nath Kovind formally appointed judge N V Ramana as the next CJI. The meeting was scheduled before the issuance of this notification.

As per the convention, after the president has issued warrants of appointment of the next CJI, the outgoing CJI doesn't make any recommendations to the Centre for appointment of any judges. An Indian Express report stated that two SC judges objected to the meeting, citing this reason. "There is no convention that the outgoing CJI can't make recommendations in the fag end of his tenure but it all depends on how he takes his colleagues into confidence," former CJI R M Lodha told The IE.

No deportation of Rohingyas in Jammu yet

The Supreme Court Thursday said Rohingyas detained in Jammu shall not be deported to Myanmar without following the prescribed process. A bench headed by the CJI passed the order on a plea seeking immediate release of detained Rohingya refugees in Jammu and a direction to restrain the Centre from deporting them to Myanmar. The Centre had earlier opposed the plea saying that India can't be the "capital" for illegal immigrants.
