Two naxals killed in encounter in Maharashtra's Gadchiroli

Two naxals including a woman were killed in an encounter with the security forces on Thursday morning in Maharashtra's Gadchiroli district, 900 km from Mumbai, police said. The gun battle took place in the area under Sawargaon police outpost limits in Dhanora tehsil around 6 am, said an official.

The police had information that more than 50 naxals had gathered in the forest near Morchul, said Gadchiroli Superintendent of Police Ankit Goyal. As a team of C-60 commandos, a special combat unit of the Gadchiroli police, and other security personnel reached the area, naxals opened fire, he said.

After the exchange of fire stopped and rebels fled, the bodies of Raja alias Ramsai Roharu Madavi (33) who was carrying a reward of Rs 12 lakh on his head and Ranita alias Punita Chipaluram Gawde (28) who was carrying a reward of Rs 2 lakh on her head were found, he said.

Madavi, who hailed from Morchul village was a 'commander'' of the Maoists'' Tipagad area committee platoon number 15 and 44 cases were registered against him including murder, the official said.

Gawde, resident of Botejhari village, was a member of Kasansoor Local Organisation Squad and nine offences were registered against her, Goyal added. An SLR rifle, 8 mm rifle, 'cooker bomb'', Improvised Explosive Devices and other material were seized by the police from the encounter site, the SP said.
