‘Most Omicron patients had no travel history’

Most of the Omicron-infected patients during the last week of December 2021 had no travel history which indicates that there was eventual community transmission, according to the study conducted by the Department of Clinical Virology, Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences, New Delhi.

"The respiratory specimen of all RT-PCR confirmed positive cases between November 25 and December 23, 2021, collected from five districts of Delhi were subjected to whole-genome sequencing. Complete demographic and clinical details were also recorded. Hence, we analysed the formation of local and familial clusters and eventual community transmission," the study noted.

As Kerala witnessed a steep surge in Covid-19 cases, State Education Minister V Sivankutty on Saturday announced the suspension of offline classes for students up to Class IX from January 21. The classes will remain suspended for a period of two weeks. The minister also said that new guidelines will be issued for students of classes IX to XII. The Jammu and Kashmir administration on Saturday imposed "complete restriction on non-essential movement" during weekends amid a surge in Covid-19 cases.

MP bans visitors from meeting jail inmates

In view of the rising cases of Covid-19 in Madhya Pradesh, the state government has banned visitors from meeting prison inmates till the end of March this year, in an attempt to prevent the spread of infection.

ECI extends ban on rallies, road shows till Jan 22

The Election Commission of India on Saturday extended the ban on physical rallies and road shows till January 22. However, it has allowed political parties to hold indoor meetings of maximum of 300 persons or 50 per cent of the capacity of the hall.
