The Nagpur Police in Maharashtra have registered a case against disqualified Congress MLA Sunil Kedar for taking out a huge procession and disrupting traffic after his release from jail, an official said on Thursday, reported the PTI.
According to the PTI, Sunil Kedar, the five-term MLA from Saoner in Maharashtra's Nagpur district, was sentenced to five years in jail on December 22, 2023, by a magistrate's court in a case related to irregularities at the Nagpur District Central Cooperative Bank (NDCCB) of which he was chairman from 1999 to 2002, as per the PTI.
The Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court had on Tuesday granted him bail and also suspended his sentence temporarily. Kedar was released from the Nagpur Central Jail around 11 am on Wednesday, the PTI reported.
According to the official, thousands of supporters of Kedar had assembled outside the jail to welcome the Congress leader.
After he walked out, Kedar took out a procession with his supporters by standing in a car with a retractable roof.
Since the presence of too many people threw vehicular movement out of gear, the Dhantoli police registered a case against the Congress leader, the official added.
The case against Kedar was related to irregularities at the NDCCB which came to light during an audit conducted by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural
Development (NABARD) and also in another audit ordered by the Cooperative Commissioner in 2002.
Meanwhile, in an another incident, the police detained 11 members of the Youth Congress in Pune city of Maharashtra on Thursday after they tried to stage a protest against the alleged irregularities in the talathi recruitment examination, an official said, according to the PTI.
They tried to hold the agitation in Deccan area in the afternoon, the official said.
The protesters claimed that some of the candidates who appeared for the talathi (village revenue official) recruitment examination in Maharashtra have received more marks than the maximum limit, which indicated rigging of the process. They demanded cancellation of the exam results.
They also alleged that candidates who are relatives of revenue officials or relatives of employees of a company appointed to conduct the examination received very good marks.
"We wanted to hold a protest and our demand was to appoint a special investigation team (SIT) to probe the irregularities. But were detained by the police," Akshay Jain, one of the members of Youth Congress, said, as per the PTI.
He said the police denied permission to them for the protest.
