A case has been registered against 51 residents of a village in Maharashtra's Aurangabad district for alleged electricity theft, an official of the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) said on Wednesday, according to the PTI.

An assistant engineer of the MSEDCL had lodged a complaint in this regard at Gangapur police station, he said, as per the PTI.

An MSEDCL team visited village Maygaon in Paithan tehsil in Aurangabad on July 3 and found several illegal connections, the official said.

A case was registered under section 135 of the Electricity Act (theft of electric lines and materials, an offence which attracts prison term of up to 3 years or fine or both) and further probe was on, he added.

Meanwhile, in an another incident in June, an offence was registered against a house owner for allegedly stealing electricity worth more than Rs 5.5 lakh in Thane city of Maharashtra, the police had earlier said, according to the PTI.

An offence under relevant provisions of the Indian Electricity Act was registered against the alleged accused who owns a bungalow in Desai village area, a police officer had said, as per the PTI.

While conducting an inspection in the area, officials from the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) found that power had been stolen between May 2022 and May 2023 directly from the electricity pole bypassing the meter, he had said.

The MSEDCL officials immediately informed the police who had registered a case against the home owner. At least 19,784 units of electricity worth more than Rs 5.5 lakh had been stolen, the police officer added.
