Kargil Vijay Diwas, also known as Kargil Victory Day, is an annual commemoration observed in India on July 26 to honour the Indian Armed Forces' victory over Pakistan in the Kargil War. The conflict took place between May and July 1999 in the Kargil district of the union territory of Ladakh that was part of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir before the Indian government downgraded the state into two federally administered territories.

The Kargil War was an armed conflict that stemmed from the infiltration of Pakistani troops and armed insurgents into the Indian side of the Line of Control (LOC), the de facto border between India and Pakistan in the region of Kashmir.
