India records 38,667 fresh Covid-19 cases, 478 deaths

India on Saturday showed a marginal dip in the daily Covid-19 caseload as it recorded 38,667 fresh infections in the last 24 hours while the recovery rate from the virus stood at 97.45 per cent. A total of 478 deaths in the same duration pushed the toll to 4,30,732.

Less than 50,000 daily new cases have been reported for 48 consecutive days, as per the Covid bulletin released by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The active caseload registered a growth of 2,446 on Saturday and the total caseload climbed to 3,87,673. The active caseloads constitute 1.21 per cent of total cases, as per the bulletin released.

Punjab's new Covid-19 rules

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Saturday ordered mandatory full Covid-19 vaccination or negative RT-PCR report for all those entering the state from Monday, with strict monitoring particularly of those coming from Himachal Pradesh and Jammu, which are showing increased positivity.

Amid reports of Covid-19 cases in schools, the Chief Minister has also directed that only fully vaccinated teaching and non-teaching staff, or those recently recovered from Covid-19, should physically teach in schools and colleges, with an online learning option to remain available to all children. He further ordered prioritisation of teachers and non-teaching staff for vaccination.

Mandaviya to visit states

Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya will be visiting Kerala on August 16, and Guwahati in Assam on August 17 to review the Covid-19 situation. According to sources, the Union Minister is likely to meet Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, and hold a meeting with state Health Minister Veena George and other officials involved in Covid-19 management there. He will be accompanied by the director of the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and other senior officials of the Health Ministry.

Mizoram's infection rate dips

Mizoram's Covid-19 graph and infection rate are showing a declining trend in the last few days as the northeastern state registered one of its lowest single-day positivity rate of 3.48 per cent on Saturday. The state's Covid-19 tally rose to 47,995 as 524 more people tested positive for the infection.
