Freedom fighter and veteran CPI(M) leader N Sankaraiah passes away at 102 in Chennai

N Sankaraiah, a prominent freedom fighter and veteran leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) CPI(M), breathed his last at the age of 102 in Chennai on Wednesday. The seasoned political figure, who played a pivotal role in the freedom struggle, was undergoing treatment for complications arising from fever and cold at Apollo Hospital in Chennai.

Upon receiving news of his demise, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin paid his respects by visiting Apollo Hospital. The mortal remains of N Sankaraiah will be kept at the CPI(M) Office before being taken to his residence, marking the end of an era in Tamil Nadu's political landscape.

In a post on social media, the Tamil Nadu Communist Party of India (Marxist) commemorated Comrade N. Sankaraiah's life, stating, "Comrade N. Sankaraiah (102), a centenarian Tamilian, passed away. He will live with us forever as a struggle history! Kudos to the friend!"

The post highlighted Sankaraiah's instrumental role in the freedom struggle, particularly in leading various student movement protests. His legacy extended into the political realm as he served as the former state secretary of Tamil Nadu for the CPI(M) from 1995 to 2002.

N Sankaraiah's contributions were not limited to the freedom movement; he also served as a two-time member of the Tamil Nadu legislative assembly, representing both the Madurai West and Madurai East constituencies.
