Farmers refuse to cremate young man who died in police clash

Farmer leaders participating in the ‘Delhi Chalo' agitation on Friday said the cremation of Shubhkaran Singh, who died amid clashes between Haryana Police and Punjab farmers, will not take place till the Punjab government registers a case against those responsible for it.

Subhkaran Singh, 21, a native of Bathinda, died on Wednesday at Khanauri border point on the Punjab-Haryana border amid clashes between Haryana Police and Punjab farmers. The incident took place when the farmers rushed to the barricades, several layers of which had been erected by Haryana authorities to prevent farmers from proceeding with their march, and clashed with police.

According to the medical superintendent of Patiala-based Rajindra Hospital, Subhkaran had an injury to his head. The post-mortem was delayed as the farmers pressed for acceptance of their demands.

Speaking to reporters in Patiala, farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher said the Punjab chief minister had asserted that stringent action would be taken against those responsible for Shubhkaran's death.

"We have told the family that it may take two days or 10 days. For us money is not important. We are demanding that an FIR be lodged and then cremation will take place," he said and accused Punjab government officials of "pressuring" Shubhkaran's family into agreeing to the cremation.

Replying to a question, Jagjit Singh Dallewal, leader of SKM (Non-Political) that is spearheading the ‘Delhi Chalo' march along with the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, claimed the senior superintendent of police of Bathinda has said that police could not register a case against Haryana security personnel.

Another farmer dies of heart attack

A 62-year-old farmer, who was part of protest, died of heart attack in Khanauri on the Punjab-Haryana border, a farmer leader said on Friday. Darshan Singh was a native of Amargarh village in Bathinda district, said Sarwan Singh Pandher. The Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and KMM are spearheading a farmers' agitation at the Shambhu and Khanauri border points of Punjab and Haryana over various of their demands, including a law on MSP. A 72-year-old farmer, part of the same agitation, had earlier died of cardiac arrest. Another 63-year-old farmer died of a heart attack at the Shambhu border.

Rs 1 cr compensation for sister: Mann

Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann announced a compensation of R1 crore and a government job for the sister of farmer Shubhkaran Singh who died during protest. "The family of Shubhkaran, who got martyred during the farmer's movement on the Khanauri border, will be given financial assistance of R1 crore and a government job to his younger sister. Due legal action will be taken against culprits," Mann said in a post.

Police withdraws move to invoke NSA

The Haryana Police said it was withdrawing its earlier decision to invoke NSA against some farmer leaders. This comes a day after Ambala police issued a statement saying that it was implementing the process of detaining office bearers of the protesting farmer outfits under section 2(3) of the National Security Act, 1980, to maintain law and order and prevent criminal activities.
