Elections for 56 Rajya Sabha seats in 15 states on Feb 27, says ECI

The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Monday announced the poll timetable for 56 Rajya Sabha seats in 15 states on Feb 27

On Monday, the Election Commission of India (ECI) announced the poll timetable for 56 Rajya Sabha seats in 15 states that will go to polls on February 27.

In an official notification, the ECI said, " the term of office of 56 members of the Council of States elected from 15 states is due to expire on their retirement in April 2024."

A total of 10 members will be retiring from the state of Uttar Pradesh on April 2, 2024, said the press note. Both Maharashtra and Bihar have six members retiring on April 2, while West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh each have five members retiring on the same date.

According to the press note, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Odisha, and Rajasthan, each have three members retiring. While members from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are retiring on April 2, the members from Odisha and Rajasthan are retiring on April 3. Both Karnataka and Gujarat will witness the retirement of 4 members on April 2, while Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand will each witness the retirement of one member.

"Adequate measures for close monitoring of the election process by appointing observers shall be taken to ensure free and fair election," the notification said.

The ECI also shared a list of important dates for the polls

- Issue of notification: February 08, 2024 (Thursday)

- Last date of making nominations: February 15, 2024 (Thursday)

- Scrutiny of nominations: February 16, 2024 (Friday)

- Last date for withdrawal of candidatures: February 20, 2024 (Tuesday)

- Date of poll: February 27, 2024 (Tuesday)

- Hours of polling: 09:00 am to 04:00 pm

- Counting of votes: February 27, 2024 (Tuesday) at 05:00 pm

-Date before which election shall be completed: February 29, 2024 (Thursday)
