As PM Modi reviews the Covid-19 situation, states bring in new restrictions

A total of 1,59,632 new Coronavirus infections were reported in a day, the highest in 224 days, while the active cases increased to 5,90,611, the highest in around 197 days, according to the data updated at 8 am on Sunday. On May 29 last year, India had logged 1,65,553 infections in a day.

While New Delhi logged 22,751 fresh cases, Uttar Pradesh saw 7,695 new infections, up from 552 a week ago. Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the evening reviewed the Covid situation in the country. The country also logged 552 new cases of Omicron, taking the total tally of such infections to 3,623 across 27 states and UTs so far, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Sunday.

Maharashtra recorded the maximum number of 1,009 cases followed by Delhi at 513, Karnataka 441, Rajasthan 373, Kerala 333 and Gujarat 204. Union Minister Jitendra Singh said that pregnant women and ‘divyang' or differently abled employees of central government departments have been exempted from attending office. They will be required to remain available and work from home, he said.

The surge in cases prompted many states to impose restrictions. Himachal Pradesh announced a five-day week in government offices besides banning social and religious gatherings from January 10 to 24 to check the spread of Coronavirus.

Ahead of Budget, 400 Parliament staffers positive

Nearly 400 staffers working with Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha secretariats and allied services have tested positive for Covid-19 in the last few days, triggering a move to impose restrictions on employees' attendance. The development comes days before the Budget session of Parliament, which usually begins in the end of January. Sources said 65 staffers of Rajya Sabha Secretariat, 200 of Lok Sabha Secretariat and 133 of allied services have tested positive for Covid-19 between January 4-8.

Daylong lockdown in Tamil Nadu

A one-day complete lockdown to tackle the rapidly rising Covid-19 cases was enforced across Tamil Nadu on Sunday. Be it arterial roads, bylanes, markets or malls, public places in the state were deserted but for the movement of people, cargo trucks and other vehicles linked to essential services.

Lab faces probe as fliers complain

A probe has been ordered against a private laboratory after a number of flyers who reached Amritsar from Italy recently tested positive for Covid-19 amid allegations by several of them that their test reports were incorrect, health officials said on Sunday. The Airports Authority of India has also replaced the services of the Delhi-based laboratory with a local lab.
