Crisis in J&K Congress as Azad loyalists quit party

In trouble for the Congress in Jammu & Kashmir, four former ministers and three former legislators have resigned from party posts, saying they have not been given an opportunity to be heard on party affairs in the union territory, sources said on Wednesday.

The leaders who have quit are close to senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad. They are G M Saroori, Jugal Kishore, Vikar Rasool and Dr Manohar Lal (former ministers), and Gulam Nabi Monga, Naresh Gupta and Amin Bhat (former legislators), the sources said. The leaders have sent their resignation letters to party chief Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and in-charge secretary, J&K, Rajni Patil.

They charged in the letter that the "hostile attitude" of the party leadership compelled them to resign from all party posts, and trained their guns at state unit chief G A Mir. They charged that the party is heading towards a "disastrous" situation under Mir and that a large number of Congress leaders have resigned and joined other parties, while some have chosen to remain silent. "They are likely to face disciplinary action," a senior party leader said.
