Congress, on Monday, criticising Prime Minister Narendra Modi over alleged lack of employment opportunities said that âRozgar Melas' are being held as he [PM Modi] feels the "heat of an election year" and to save his image. The grand old party's criticism came after over 50,000 appointment letters to youth were distributed in a Rozgar Mela held on August 28.
The party's General Secretary Jairam Ramesh termed the Rozgar Melas as the "biggest jumlas" (rhetoric) and said that PM Modi has "failed" to fulfil his promise of creating two crore jobs per year.
Ramesh taking to X (formerly known as Twitter) said that PM Modi is feeling the heat of election year and is thus is hosting Rozgar Melas to save his "flailing image".
"After failing to fulfill his grand promise of creating 2 crore jobs per year. After destroying the MSME sector with demonetisation, a badly designed GST and an ill-planned sudden lockdown. After betraying the hope of aspirational youth for more than 9 years, the Prime Minister is feeling the heat in an election year. To save his flailing image, he has come up with one of the biggest jumlas - the PM Rozgar Mela," he wrote.

Jairam Ramesh further went onto say that the posts already sanctioned have not been filled up for years owing to administrative or financial reason. He also said that in large number of instances, letters are being handed out even in cases of promotion.
"The Mela personalises employment in the government sector as if the PM is singularly responsible for mostly routine job offers. Job creation comes from economic growth that is driven by investments," Ramesh wrote and added, "The PM Rozgar Mela is a gimmick and is yet another proof of a gigantic ego, enormous vanity, the unbounded self-obsession and the refusal to accept responsibility for the dire unemployment situation."
PM Modi distributes 51,000 appointment letters
PM Modi on Monday distributed 51,000 appointment letters to the youth, mostly in security forces. He added that tourism sector itself is expected to contribute Rs 20 lakh crore to the economy by 2030 and had the potential to create 13-14 crore new jobs.
