Centre sends Delhi only 499 MT oxygen despite SC’s stern warning

AAP MLA Raghav Chadha on Sunday said that Delhi received just 499 metric tonnes (MT) of oxygen on May 8, against the average supply of 700 MT ordered by the Supreme Court. The SC had on Friday directed the Centre to supply 700 MT oxygen daily until it modifies the order. "We don't want to be coercive, it had said.

Over the last week, the city got an average of 533 MT oxygen daily, which is 76 percent of the quantity directed by the SC. On Saturday, four healthcare facilities in Delhi, with 1,271 oxygen beds, sent out oxygen shortage SOS calls, the city government said. The Delhi government supplied 15.50 MT of oxygen to these hospitals, according to official data.

Meanwhile, Delhi, Jammu & Kashmir and Uttar Pradesh extended their lockdown till May 17. Delhi announced suspension of Metro train services and prohibition of wedding ceremonies at public places. Delhi Metro trains were so far operating with 50 per cent seating capacity and ban on standing commuters.

In J&K, only essential services are allowed and permissible gathering for marriages is reduced to 25 from the current 50 with effect from Sunday itself.

In UP, essential work such as vaccination, industrial activity and medical-related work are allowed. Online classes at government and private educational institutes and coaching institutes will also remain suspended during this period.
